By the year 2100, every coastal city will experience significant sea level rise and and severe storm surges leading to regular inundation by water. How can resilient cities not just survive, but also thrive in the face of climate change? This question was posed by the Boston Living with Water competition, drawing entries by 50 teams around the world. This presentation will review Architerra’s winning submission which illustrates many practical, creative ideas for enhancing coastal resiliency while advancing livability, equability and carbon neutrality. It will also highlight precedents from Hamburg Germany and Copenhagen Denmark, providing further inspiration to spur new thinking. Part inspiration, part wake-up call, this session will encourage construction professionals to contemplate the serious risk of rising tides and extreme weather while promoting industry-wide collaboration to realize climate adaptation and resilient futures through revolutionary thinking.
Ellen Watts, co-founder and principal of Architerra in Boston, is an architect and planner whose mission-driven practice focuses on sustainable buildings and resilient urban plans for which the firm has been recognized by 30 design awards.
Ellen co-produced Architerra’s winning vision for the Boston Living with Water international ideas competition and served as principal-in-charge and co-designer for an impressive portfolio that includes:
The first net zero energy, public office building in MA;
The first LEED Platinum educational buildings in three states (MA, NY and NH);
Two AIA/COTE Top 10 Ten Green Buildings, both integrating renewable energy;
The Massachusetts/NREL Wind Technology Testing Center, first-of-a-kind in the world;
The Boston Public Market, the first permanent, year-round, venue focusing on local food.
Ellen served as co-chair of the Massachusetts Governor’s Task Force on Zero Net Energy Buildings and past president of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Boston. She holds degrees from Smith College (B.A.), Harvard Graduate School of Design (M.Arch.), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.S. Real Estate Development).
