Chapter Scholarship Application Form The National Association of Women in Construction – NAWIC believes that it is their responsibility to reach out to its members and the community to educate them and to expose young people to exciting careers in construction. We’re pleased to report that from 1973 to 2007 the Boston Chapter has awarded 109 scholarships totaling $114,700. Annually scholarship applications are sent to local vocational high schools as well as colleges that offer construction related programs. Applicants must be pursuing an education and career in a construction related field. Programs may include architecture, construction management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, etc. We consider high school seniors and those already enrolled full time and we encourage those who’ve received awards in the past to reapply in future years. The Board of Directors determines the amount of scholarship funds to be awarded and it is the committee’s job to review the applications and select the recipients. Applications are due back to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson annually by March 1st. The committee will decide, based on the number of qualified applicants how much to award each recipient. Typically the recipients and their guest are invited to our June business / dinner meeting for the presentation of scholarships. Boston Chapter No. 15 held their annual scholarship presentation on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the MIT Faculty Club in Boston as part of their regular business meeting. Chapter President Amy MacDonough introduced Terry Saunders who made the presentation. This year’s scholarship committee consisted of Chairwoman Deborah Griffin an attorney at Holland & Knight (who has been committee chair since 1994), Sharon Jozokos, Project Director with William A. Berry & Sons and Theresa Saunders, Regional HR Manager at NES Traffic Safety. Heather Powers of Presque Isle, Maine who is attending Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and anticipates receiving a Bachelor of Architecture in 2009 was presented our 2007 scholarship. She met several women who own or are employed at local architectural firms and was encouraged to network and attend future meetings. Heather wrote in her application “I became interested in architecture because it has both technical and artistic challenges relating to our environment and the way people live” and that “construction should be thought of as more than the act of building, it is the process of creating something better”. 06.19.07: Saunders, Powers, Griffin |
